What Are EAS Systems?
Electronic article surveillance (EAS) is a loss prevention system that is designed to deter shoplifting. It makes use of an antenna and are usually positioned at the exit/entrance of a store to create an 'invisible gate'. Sending out electronic signals through the antenna, the system senses EAS tags, placed on products.
Tags are usually attached to products in-store by the retailer and can be removed or deactivated at the checkout. If any item that contains an active tag passes through the gate created by the EAS system, the alarm will sound, alerting staff to the fact. Most systems are able to sense signals of tags a relatively long distance from the actual exit, giving staff ample time to confront anyone suspected of shoplifting.
